As a BMW CCA member
One day I got an email from my local BMW CCA chapter asking for volunteers to help Grid at the 2022 BMW CCA Club Racing event at the NJ Motorsports Park (NJMP). Since NJMP was less than an hour away, I immediately volunteered to help!

Volunteering at a BMW CCA Club Race Event?
I believe that all of the people who help run the BMW CCA Club Racing league are volunteers because they all have a shared passion for racing BMW’s!
They needed Grid Marshall’s, I have never done it before, but moved some things around so that I can go!
What is the Grid?
The Grid is essentially where they line up the cars in order of how they qualify (Fastest to slowest in the back)
What is a Grid Marshall?
Grid Marshalls have three main functions:
- They line up the cars in the order they qualify for a race, (fastest cars first).
- For practice and qualifying sessions they just line up in the order that they arrive to grid.
- Visual safety checks of the cars as they come into the grid.
- They provide information to the racers on the time before they proceed onto the track, (5 min, 3 min. and 1 min.) and then release them from the grid.
Grid Marshal Check List:
- Wristband Check
- Is this the right car/driver for our league?
- Tech Inspection Sticker
- Do they have one and is the date on the sticker current?
- Hood Pins in Place
- Teams are constantly pulling up their hoods and tinkering and sometimes can forget to secure both hood pins?
- Doors and Gas/fuel cap closed tightly
- Nets in Place?
- Helmet chin strap tightly fastened?
- HANS tether fastened to helmet
- Shoulder Harnesses properly securing HANS
- Fire bottle safety pin pulled
- Rain light on as required
- Exterior check – all secure, no leaks, no smoke
- Grid spot correct
- Camera on
- Every single car is equipped with an on board camera should they run into issues on the track, there will be multiple angles of the incident.

Cars are lined up in order of their fastest qualifying lap from fastest to slowest.
