Remember to use a charcoal air filter to absorb hazardous chemicals in the air!
Otherwise driving your car may be slowly killing you! Remember to change your car’s cabin filter(s) before every season (Summer & Winter).

Quality filters have “Activated Carbon” which helps to filter out not only physical particles but also remove volatile organic compounds in the air.
They trap gas molecules from 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮!
Through a process called adsorbtion where the pollutants stick to the outside of the carbon., instead of inside the structure itself (like when water is soaked up by a sponge).
The problem with an activated carbon bed is that over time, the gaseous pollutants increasingly fill up the adsorption sites of the activated carbon.
Then, once the bed is saturated, the filter can no longer trap pollutants. (duh)
HOWEVER at this point once the filter is clogged the new incomeing chemicals with a greater “affinity” for an adsorption site (i.e. the carbon) can displace those with lesser affinity (i.e. release dangerous gas into the cabin). This can depend on the temperature and humidity of the world around you.

If you smell a strange odor from your car’s Air system, it’s most likely a clogged filter.
At this point, it is too late and you are already inhaling dangerous gases.
Most car manufacturer’s cheap out and use one filter for the massive duty of filtering all of incoming air you have to breathe while sitting inside your car.
The 2014 Audi A4 (seen here) uses one filter, my 2008 BMW 528i has two slightly larger filters and the MINI also wisely uses two filters that act as a large panel.
IDK why VW thought one was enough, but it just means that it will need to be changed more frequently.
